  • Casual reminder that I live in Wisconsin and it's beautiful 😍 SAVE for future reference!

Tim and I have traveled around the world twice, visiting all 7 continents and nearly 80 countries. Here are just a few of the reasons we still live in Wisconsin:

1. There are over 15,000 lakes in Wisconsin. The one in this photo is just a few blocks from my home in Madison.

2. Want a beach vacation? Wisconsin has hundreds of miles of coastline along Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, two of the Great Lakes. The water is a beautiful teal in the summer.

3. Craft beer is a big deal in Wisconsin, with hundreds of local breweries. Milwaukee and Madison are just two cities where you'll find a high concentration of unique local breweries, but you'll find them all over the state!

4. Say cheese! Wisconsin has more "best cheese" awards than any other state or country in the world. 😋 🧀 sorry France!

5. National parks in Wisconsin? Yep!🙌 The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a great place to experience Lake Superior. There's also: the St. Croix National Riverway, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

Have you ever visited Wisconsin? What are some underrated destinations that you love?

  • What CITY tops your travel list for this year?

Tim and I have day dreamed so much over the last year about which cities we'd want to visit first once it's safe. As much as we obviously love the outdoors, we enjoy exploring cities too, and have missed the arts, culture, music, food, etc. that you can experience in a city environment.

Las Vegas and Nashville were the two cities top on our list for this year. We were able to do a modified Vegas trip in February for my birthday, and tonight we're flying to Nashville for a wedding! We're going to enjoy some BBQ and live music, and even though we know this trip will still be different from the past, we're grateful to be able to safely visit (thanks Pfizer 😊).

📍Location Tips

This one pretty much speaks for itself 😅. The famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is located just past the southern end of the Vegas Strip (about a block south of Mandalay Bay). It's free to visit, but a little out of the way if you're staying further north. That said, now is a great time to check it out since it's an outdoor activity and many of Vegas' indoor attractions (shows) are on hiatus.

The sign dates from the 1950s and is a national historic landmark. Recently installed solar panels fully power the neon lights, which I think is pretty cool 😎

📷Photo Tips

No matter when you visit the sign you will have to wait in line for a this photo. We saw some people trying different angles or taking photos from the back to bypass the line. I think as long as you're not in any one else's way, feel free to get creative if waiting doesn't appeal to you or you don't mind having other people in your photo.

The line was 15 minutes long when we were there, around midday on a Sunday in February. Tip - Google Maps can tell you how busy a place is at any given time!

Street entertainers and Elvis impersonators are happy to join your photo for a tip and there's often an unofficial photographer who will take your photo if you don't have a tripod (again, for a tip).

Have you ever waited in line for a photo?

  • Road Trip Tips for Couples 💑 (SAVE for later!)

You could also call this post "how not to go crazy when you're in a car with the same person for hours on end"😂

Exactly 10 years ago this month, Tim and I took our first trip together. It was a road trip from Austin to the Grand Canyon. Since then, we've roadtripped all over the United States, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and Africa together. Here's how we stay sane and happy with each other on the road 🙃⬇️

1. Communication is everything! Plan your route in advance and agree about your plans, from how long you want to drive each day, to what you want to see and do. This way you'll be on the same page and not end up having a dumb argument about what to do when you could be enjoying your time!

2. Plan ahead how you will eat and drink and pack plenty of water and snacks with you. We travel with a gallon of water per person and our @rtic cooler with loads of food so we can make sandwiches, salads, etc. on the road!

3. Make time for quality time. Being together on the road day after day can make it easy to take your person for granted and get bored with one another. Make sure to treat yourselves to a date night with a special meal, card game tournament, etc.

4. But don't forget to take time yourself when you need it too! When you spend long days in a small space with the same person, you're bound to get a little annoyed with one another. Make sure you take solo time when you need it, even if it's just doing you're own thing when you get to your destination.

5. Divide and conquer responsibilities to split the work. Tim loves to drive but hates researching and planning routes, so I plan our trips and make all our bookings. In return, Tim does most of the driving (and cooking too!).

Have you ever gone on a road trip with a significant other?

  • Instagram vs Reality time - Seven Magic Mountains edition 🌈 (SAVE for your future planning)

I'm going to be super transparent with you here - this iconic art installation in the middle of the desert right outside of Las Vegas is very cool...but you might be disappointed if you think:

🤔That the structures are huge (they aren't)

🤔That you'll have the place to yourself (you won't - swipe for the video we took there)

🤔That it's permanent (it's not - you'll need to get there this year if you want to see it!)

🤔That you will learn something about what this art "means" (there are no signs explaining the installation beyond a short introductory board about the artist and materials)

Is it worth a stop? Absolutely - whether you consider yourself an art enthusiast or not, I pretty much always recommend saying "yes" to opportunities to see unique installations or experiences. But, I think you'll enjoy more if your expectations are aligned with reality too.

So what are my recommendations for the BEST visit to 7 Magic Mountains?

🌈Go early in the morning to beat the crowds!

🌈Read about the piece and the artist beforehand so you can better appreciate what you're looking at

🌈Bring water, a hat, and sunglasses - there is no shade here, aside from the little bit cast by the "mountains" themselves!

🌈Don't rush. Take your time and be patient if you're trying to take photos with few other people.

  • 🔥HOT off the press!🔥 I just published my trip planning guide to Capitol Reef National Park on the blog! 🥳 (SAVE FOR LATER!)

Utah's least visited national park is the one I am most excited to return to again in the future. This underrated destination is huge, weird, and full of adventure opportunities.

What you'll find in my guide:

💥WHY you should visit Capitol Reef National Park to begin with

💥Where it is and how to get there

💥Where to stay and what to eat (hint: there's some CURRY PIZZA 🍕 in store for ya)

💥Top things to do (hikes, scenic drives, AND thousands of years of history)

💥My "Don't Miss This!" list of places nearby

🙌PLUS a handy dandy MAP so you know exactly where all of these places are.🙌

Linking below, in my bio, and in my stories today (basically alllll over the place) - check it out and happy planning!

  • 4 Things to Do in Grand Staircase-Escalante WITHOUT a 4x4 (SAVE this post for planning later!🙌)

Want to explore Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument but don't have a high clearance 4x4? No problem! You can still safely drive to the following destinations in any car:

✅Devil's Garden (pictured here)

✅Kodachrome Basin State Park

✅Burr Trail Road

✅Dry Fork, Peek a Boo, and Spooky Slot canyons

Note that some of these roads are unpaved, so check road conditions, especially after a rain. You don't want to get stuck in the mud!

Also, we did all of these hikes and activities over the course of 2 days/1 night. I recommend spending more time if you have high clearance 4x4 since there is a lot more to see and do near Escalante if so!🤩

  • Remembering magic moments ✨

Picture it. You and your person, in a small and secluded Utah town, surrounded by mountains and hills and geothermal wonders that make places like @mystichotsprings possible.

We booked a private soak on a Friday afternoon to have the entire place to ourselves. Not even the owner was there (we called and checked in for our visit by phone).

As rugged as it is a luxury, this was the perfect place to pamper ourselves with nature's best. No fancy showers or jet pools, just some tubs and soaking pools that, over time, have become consumed by the build up of hard minerals in the thermal water.

That bright rock behind us? Yep, mineral water made that.

Nature feels powerful here, even as it gently melts you away into relaxation.

It's places like this, that keep their wild sense of place and defer to nature's grand design, that win my heart over every time.

Have you ever been to a natural hot spring?

📍Location Info

Mystic Hot Springs is located in a small town in Utah and a worthy stop on a Utah road trip! It's not too far from some of the state's best hiking areas too (if you need to soak sore legs after!).

  • Do you know the difference between Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and National Park areas? (SAVE for future reference!)

To be honest - we didn't until recently! Southern Utah, where we spent this past winter, is full of incredible natural landscapes and hiking areas. Some of these areas are state parks, some are national parks, some are BLM, anda some are none of the above. Some BLM land borders national parks, and sometimes they even overlap (Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, for example, is a national monument, but it's administered by BLM). Confused yet?

So what's the difference? In general:

National Parks:

✅Have designated trails and amenities like paved roads and bathrooms.
❌Typically have an entrance fee (TIP - if you plan to visit more than 2-3 parks in a 12 month timespan, we highly recommend getting the America the Beautiful Parks Pass!)
❌Are more frequently visited
✅Have more information online and in travel guides for planning!
❌Most often require permits for camping

Bureau of Land Management:

✅Oversees about 1/8 of the land in the United States - more than any other agency
❌Generally doesn't have designated trails (or the trail is more primitive) or ameneties
❌Often requires offroading
✅More flexible camping options (often you can just park and camp anywhere unless a sign says not to)
❌Some permit-only areas (for example, the infamous Wave in Arizona)

Neither is better than the other, and you're sure to find beautiful sights in both!

Have you ever explored Bureau of Land Management areas?

This is a BLM area near Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. If you haven't noticed, I've got a bit of a thing for all of Utah's rainbow colored rocks :)

  • HOW TO SPEND A DAY IN CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK 🙌
(Save this post for your future trip planning!)

1. Drive the Grand View Point Road to the end and you'll see where it gets its name.

2. Hike the Grand View Point trail (1.8 miles out and back), where we took this photo!

3. Drive to Upheaval Dome and see a jumble of rocks formed by a geological anomaly.

4. Hike Whale Rock (. 8 miles out and back) for cool 360° views around the park.

5. Sunset (or sunrise!) at Mesa Arch, nature's most perfect picture frame 🙌

📍Location Tips

Grand View Point Trail, Canyonlands National Park

The town of Moab, Utah is the closest base for accessing both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. You'll find all your major hotel chains (for those loyalty points!) PLUS plenty of charming local hotels, resorts, and B&Bs. You can also camp in the park - just be prepared for whatever season you're in. Nights in winter are COLD and days in summer are HOT.

Get creative with new perspectives and poses! When Tim told me to lay down for this shot I thought it was a terrible idea 🙈but he was right - the fun and unique position makes this one of my favorite photos of myself!
