1. Dead Horse Point – West Facing
When you get to Dead Horse Point, we recommend first going to the west-facing overlook for views of the sun setting over the canyon and a gooseneck of the Colorado River.

As the sun descends, casting a warm glow over the rugged cliffs and deep canyons, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues, painting the horizon with shades of orange, pink, and purple. The Colorado River winds its way through the canyon below, reflecting the colors of the sky as it meanders through the desert landscape. In the distance, the silhouettes of mesas and buttes add to the majestic beauty of the scene, creating an unforgettable and awe-inspiring vista.
This is the best spot to watch the sun set beyond the horizon and an excellent opportunity for sun flare photography.

2. Dead Horse Point – East Facing
For a different sunset experience, head to Dead Horse Point Overlook to the east-facing side, where you can see fascinating views of the geometric Potash Ponds (Utah is one of only two states that produce potash. The other is New Mexico).

As the sun sets behind you, casting a warm glow over the rugged landscape, you’re treated to stunning views of the canyonlands bathed in golden light. The shadows cast by the cliffs create depth and contrast, enhancing the beauty of the scene. Additionally, facing east allows you to capture breathtaking photos of the colorful sky as it reflects off the rock formations and stretches out across the horizon.

Some locations may require a hike or have limited parking, while others may be more easily accessible but might attract larger crowds. Researching beforehand can help you find a spot that aligns with your preferences and expectations.
- Remember to bring plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized during your sunset excursion. Moab’s desert climate can be arid and hot, especially during the evening, so it’s crucial to stay hydrated and nourished throughout your outing.
- Bringing a blanket or light jacket to wrap around your shoulders can also enhance your comfort as the temperature drops with the setting sun. Even during warmer months, desert nights can become chilly, so having an extra layer can help you stay cozy while you soak in the sunset views.
- To fully immerse yourself in the sunset experience, aim to arrive at your chosen spot at least an hour before sunset. This will allow you to enjoy the golden hour, the period shortly before sunset when the lighting is soft and warm, creating a magical ambiance. Arriving early also allows you to find a comfortable spot, set up any photography equipment if desired, and settle in to fully appreciate the unfolding spectacle.
- For photography enthusiasts, sunset in Moab offers fantastic opportunities to capture stunning images. Consider bringing a camera or smartphone with a good quality lens to capture the vibrant colors and dramatic landscapes. Experiment with different angles, compositions, and settings to create unique and memorable photos. Additionally, using a tripod can help stabilize your camera and capture sharp, clear images, especially in low-light conditions.
